When the PlayStation launched, the games originally came in Sega Saturn / Sega CD boxes. As time moved on, Sony converted to their own version, with bumpy spines and place plastic. From here, they went to a one-piece, cardboard style.

After the last few, Sony converted to the then standard jewel cases. This stayed the norm until the PlayStation 2 launched, and the world went to DVD cases.

An interesting note of sorts is that some 'long boxes' may never have been real retail releases; instead they were pre-order display boxes. The problem being that they were still 'real' cases, they were just never shipped with the game and manual as an official release. One such example is Space Hulk. Though a long box does exist, it's not on this release because the case was only used as a pre-order display.

More research is being done on the subject, though right now it seems that Resident Evil's 'flat cardboard' version may have been a pre-order display case as well. Unless we get an official word from Sony, the truth may never be known.
