Stand Tall & Shake the Heavens

A mysterious organization is turning the tides of a century-long war with ancient technology - giant combat robots known as Gears.

A failed attempt to steal one of these powerful mechanized weapons places it in the unwilling hands of young Fei and his dubious allies.

Now he is pursued by military governments, royal pirates, spies, the emperor, and his own forgotten past.

Discussion
One of the most beloved of Square's PlayStation line-up. Sadly, working full time and going to school full time does not allow me to actually play the game since it takes 20 minutes just to get through the opening dialogue.
Trivia
  • Special thanks to Brandon Schlegel for bringing me up to date on the Black Label variant. Updated information appears below in the Variants section.

  • Both Xenogears and Guilty Gear feature characters called Gears. In Xeno's case, they're giant mechanical robots. In Guilty's case, they're combative androids.

  • The series was passed off to Namco for the PlayStation 2 versions. Sadly, it seems the FMV sequences have overtaken the game play aspect. Even worse, in the 3rd game, the anime look has been cast off for realistic looking characters. Final Fantasy VIII anyone?

  • The Japanese version features some nudity in one of the cinemas, which was cut in the US release.

  • Chrono Trigger's Lucca makes a neat cameo in the game. She's the one who teaches you about Save Points.

  • In Solaris, the apartment complex wields a poster that features Final Fantasy VII's Tifa.

  • There's an odd typo in the game. Several screens refer to your magic as EP (Ether Points) while other screens refer to the same thing as MP (Magic Points).

Variants / Misprints
There are two known variants for the game. The original Black Label has a variant to the disc artwork that adds in Square's Hint Line. The other is your standard Greatest Hits release, with generic CD artwork.

We are still currently trying to see if there is a "middle man" variant, which is a Black Label variation with Square Enix as the publisher, or a Greatest Hits version with Square Soft as the publisher.

Xenogears - "900 Klue" Variant: The CD Cases are the same, but note the inclusion of the 1-900-451-KLUE number at the bottom of both CDs.

Xenogears - "Greatest Hits" Variant: Released after the Square / Enix merger. SLUSGH ID tag, PSRMs now end in 1.
