Discussion
Tecmo Bowl was one of the few sports games the NES had that I could play and enjoy immensely. It was designed so that anyone could play, the choices were few, action was fast, and damn if you didn’t laugh at the poor player who got launched halfway down the field.

As the game went on, Tecmo kept making it just a bit more realistic with each release. While others embraced this, a few die-hards didn’t want it, myself included. The arcade aspect of the game is what made it fun. With the PlayStation version, that fear is quietly realized. That isn’t to say Tecmo Super Bowl is a bad game – it’s just not the game it really should be.

When compared to other games out at the time, it’s good, but not great nor terrible. It’s essentially a Super Nintendo game given a minor polygon upgrade on the field and some minor tweaks in all the areas. The game still controls like the NES original, hike the ball, arrow over to a player and toss – easy stuff. Sadly, I do miss the “HUT HUT HUT HUT HUT” of the original one.

If you’re going for nostalgia or a complete collection, by all means snag it for a few bucks. Otherwise, the NES versions are still the best.

Trivia
  • Tecmo Super Bowl offers a mode where you choose to be the coach called COA mode, for 'Computer Assist'. Essentially, you only control the punt meter, and then all play calls. The game will then control the players allowing you to sit back and simply think out the game, rather than have to actually play. It does make for a nifty Chess-like atmosphere when playing against someone else.

  • At the title screen, you can view a very compressed movie clip of Tecmo's then upcoming game Deception.

  • Like other games around this early era, the players are all sprites. It's pretty fun to go back and look at just how long it took sports games to catch up to the polygon revolution.

  • In a rather peculiar move, you're allowed to completely edit real players - names and all. So if you want the (then) Packers to be lead by Captain PoopyHead with the All-Star running back Dumb Dumby, you can!

  • The last Tecmo Bowl game released until the DS and Xbox Live Version.

  • Tecmo Bowl's legion of die-hard fans truly are die-hard. There are still on-line leagues who use the older game's engine but with hacked-in updated stats and the like.
