Discussion
Sports games are never my thing, unless they’re arcade-like. That said,
I can at least spot a great game when I see one, and by god Fox Sports
Golf ’99 will never, ever get that chance to be one.
Here’s the situation. There’s more than a heavy possibility that the
game was originally developed for the PC and just dumped to the console
without a second thought. Just from the opening menu, you realize you
are in for a world of pain and suffering. The first sign of trouble is
that the menu set-up itself is so user unfriendly and unintuitive that
it sets up your expectations for the rest of the game. After wrestling
with the menu set-up, and then picking from a rather insanely limited
golf roster of 1 person and 4 shirts, you’re brought to the game itself.
I’m no programmer, honest to god; but at 3 years after launch you would
think they could get trees that don’t look like the NES versions or a
camera system that actually was aware of the surroundings. After 3 holes
of golf, I had already had to move the camera 4 times because it ended
up in front of a tree that was behind me. I was also +12, but that may
be partially my abilities too.
What other fun things are there...The golf meter is hard to comprehend,
the graphics are sub-par, and the frame rate is choppy at best, but the
worst, the absolute worst - is the running commentary. There is never a
silent moment, and if you screw up, you will hear about it, over, and
over, and over again. It wasn’t just minor comments too; the announcer
practically insults your mother with his tone and inflection.
There are no redeeming qualities to this game; none. *None*. There are
very few games I can say with 100% confidence that I will never touch
again unless required to for a Game Rave article. This is one of those
games. |
Trivia
- The game supports
the Multi-Tap, but does not mention it on the back insert.
