Review
Though archaic by today's standards, this was the game that all future football games would be judged by. It's actually still playable in that Super Nintendo kind of way, game play wise.

Trivia
  • Case variants, see below.

  • This was the first ever football game for the console.

  • The jewel case variant features the blurb "PlayStation's #1 Best Seller" but for whatever reason they chose to eliminate it from the Greatest Hits version.

  • EA dropped Madden '96 PSX from release after seeing this in action. It is the only time in Madden history that a version was cancelled.

Greatest Hits
This title was released as a Greatest Hit in regular packaging.

Variations / Misprints
NFL GameDay was released in 3 variations outside of the Greatest Hits. There's the cardboard long box, the plastic long box, and the jewel case variant. The two long boxes are shown below.

PlayStation 2 Compatibility - Fast Load
All times are rounded up to the nearest second. Tests are performed on a PlayStation 2 Slim Line with 1.11 PS Drivers.

Standard

Select to Coin Toss - 27 sec

Fast

You're reading that right. There is absolutely no difference in load times for the game regardless of which side you're on.

Game loaded  fine with both options turned on.

PlayStation 2 Compatibility - Smooth
With the smooth option on, GameDay does something odd for a 2D sprite game; it makes the player sprites sharper. When the camera zooms in, they look damn near pixel perfect, like they should be in a fighting game. The backgrounds have a minor smoothness to them, viewable in the scoreboard and on the grass.
