Yippie-Ki-Yay! John McClane is Back!

The odds are against John McClane as he battles terrorists intent on wiping Sin City from the map. Blast your way through 25 levels of non-stop action in three different game styles. Combine all three explosive games into an original adventure, or choose to play the one you like best.

Discussion
Die Hard Trilogy 2 was done by a different developer and you can tell right out of the gate. While Probe’s version was all about the rambunctious antics, n-Space’s take focuses more on the graphics and story telling. While not a bad thing, there are some definite shortcomings that start to peek through the layers.

Like the first one, the game is divided into 3 genres; racing, action, and light gun. The driving game focuses on chasing random bad guy cars, stopping bombs, and occasionally not hit anything at all. The action sequences take you from various locales that usually involve keycards in random places, on random people, or doors that don’t properly present themselves. The light gun sequence, which is where I wanted to be wowed so badly, falls in on itself.

Essentially the problem comes in the engine itself; it’s too old and it’s not up to task. Textures are muddy, places are dark, and a lot of times there are too many odds stacked against you. The game is too clunky for it’s own good.

On a more positive side, there is a LOT of support for accessories. You can use any Justifier or GunCon, any Steering Wheel, and even a mouse. The game has a mode missing in the first one, which is a small saving grace. Rather than just play through each genre, you can go through a Movie Mode that will apply the proper genre depending on what part of the story you’re at. Save that, the game simply doesn’t live up to the legacy it’s attached to.

Yippie kai doh.

Trivia
  • Game takes place outside of the movie canon.

  • There is a visual glitch in the opening story cinematic. John's friend who runs the prison says the celebration party is in a few days, yet he is already wearing the tuxedo.

  • Greatest cameo ever? There is a truck graphic used in several stages, and he bears a very large resemblance to the Transformer Optimus Prime, leader of the Autobots!

  • If you drive in first person mode, when you strike a cow, blood will splatter the windshield and your wipers will clear the blood off (see third screenshot).

  • The game supports both the GunCon and the regular Justifier type guns.

  • In the Chemical Plant stage, there is access to a Fire Truck / Emergency vehicle area. This is a possible reference to the original movie (the bad guy's use of an ambulance), or the Die Hard arcade game, since in one stage there are bad guys in firefighter outfits.
