Mad Duck released several
imported PlayStation games at the budget price points of $9.99 during
the final years of the system. When a new game is under $10, sometimes
your skepticism can be the harshest judge and base the quality simply by
the price. All Star Racing is the kind of gamble that would have
almost paid off on its launch day.
First we'll deal with the game's single most important flaw; it was
drawn and quartered. Rather than being a straight up single game, it is
instead divided into 4 car categories: GT Racing, Stock Car, Classic,
and Super Car Racing. While this sounds like a huge added bonus, you're
instead stuck with 3 cars and 3 tracks per class. Even worse, when you
get to the race, there are 6 cars - two of each three. Oddly enough,
each car controls the same regardless of which car class or car within
the class you pick. Essentially it is just a choice of cosmetics.
Speaking of looks, there's a category where the game shines. While the
car models are smidge on the basic side, the tracks are wonderfully
designed with a lot of scenery and detail. The texture artists had fun
mocking real world brand icons to avoid licensing issues. The obvious
Tide car is called the 'File' racing team, and there's a Champstick car
as well. As mentioned, each section has three tracks, and while they do
conform to each class' format, many of them begin to look alike after
only an hour's playtime.
If you're looking for an in-depth racer, you'll need to pass this up. If
you're looking for a cheap thrill with mild investment time, you've
found the right raceway.

Trivia
- There's a weird
glitch in the Stockcar Frenzy selection screen. The cars are one
selection choice off of their names. If you want the File Car, you
need to Choose Champstick, etc.
- Like the phony car
sponsors, many of the on-track logos and sponsors are all parodies
or generic equivalents of their real world counterparts.
- All Star Racing
and it's sequel All Star Racing 2 both share the exact same
graphic design set-up, and even the exact same borders / layout on
the back panel.
- The Copyright Info
on that runs along the edge of the CD is upside down.
